Into The Wild

What's it all about? Drama- Biopic telling the story of Christopher McCandless , student who upon graduation donates his entire savings to Oxfam and decides to travel to Alaska ; breaking away from from both family and society.

Starring? Emile Hirsch , Jena Malone , Vince Vaugn , Kristen Stewart

I am soon to embark on gap year travels of my own , so it's worth saying anything involving the subject usually is of some interest to me. Into the wild tells the true story of McCandless , who drops everything with the youthful idea of travelling across America. The ideal is something I relate to in parts , though I hardly wish to act on it , I've long since had the desire to leave the city behind and take a journey travelling. Writer / Director Sean Penn paints a complex portrait of McCandless' rare journey , it's somewhat unbiased leaving the final judgement upon the audience. His direction involves us in moments of an idealic bliss and crippling tragedy, as McCandless stumbles across the American wilderness in search of some kind of contentment. Emile Hirsch gives a commendable performance as the lead , giving us a true sense of his journey. The supporting cast do well , minus Stewart who gives us a bland and irritable performance. McCandless is brave , reckless and naive , we can never quite make up our minds about him. It is a charming and thought provoking tale , fizzing with youthful energy and a deep sense of humanity.  It certainly amplified my desire to travel , although I wont be giving away all my possessions any time soon and attempting to live in the outback.

Verdict? 4.5 stars , a rare and poignant story
