What's it about? The latest instalment in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. The 'Dark Knight' must resurface to save Gotham against it's latest enemy , despite public opinion being against him.
Starring? Christian Bale , Joseph Gordon Levitt , Gary Oldman , Anne Hathaway , Marion Cotillard , Morgan Freeman , Michael Cane , Tom Hardy ......
Like many others , this was a highly anticipated film for me. In fact I decided to see the film at 1.30 am at the BFI Imax at Waterloo , waiting an hour and a half between the last train to Waterloo and the commencement of the film. In summary I would not have taken it lightly if the latest Batman was not up to my standards. Nolan you did not disappoint.
One of my pet peeves with films are those that go on for too long (aka Avatar or 162 minutes of my life I am not getting back) but despite the 164 minute length I remained entertained throughout. The Dark Knight Rises was truly spectacular , and provided a perfect ending to Nolan's trilogy. It was everything a superhero film should aspire to be , and don't get me wrong the action , special effects and explosions were brilliant but this was not what I admired most about the film. It was the fact that Christopher Nolan and his brother Jonathon Nolan (who co wrote the film) managed to find a sense of humanity beneath the character's famous costumes.
The script was witty , and the plot was constantly fast paced ensuring the finale included as many cameos , plot twists and loose ends tied up as was possible. As expecting with a cast like this the acting was very much on point , my only criticism being the sometimes inaudible mumbling of Batman and Bane. I'm not sure what else I can really say about this film without including spoilers so I will conclude by saying that I know when I see a film this good because it stops me wanting to be a film-maker , to me it seems completely out of my reach to make a film anywhere near this standard - although maybe I could do something with a budget of around 250 million.
Goodbye Coen brothers and hello Nolan brothers.
Verdict? 5 Stars , a legend in itself
