Best Picture
Amour / Life Of Pi / Argo / Lincoln / Beats Of The Southern Wild / Silver Linings Playbook / Django Unchained / Zero Dark Thirty / Les Miserables
Verdict? The obvious suggestion is that Lincoln ill leave victorious , however part of me wonders if this will be a controversial year for the Oscars and Argo or Les Mis may take the top prize?
Best Actor
Bradley Cooper / Joaquin Phoenix / Daniel Day Lewis / Denzel Washington / Hugh Jackman
Verdict? The winner will be Day-Lewis , and while I'm content I also think it's time for someone else to win , Phoenix' performance in The Master was extraordinary and worth commending.
Best Actress
Jessica Chastain / Jennifer Lawrence / Emmanuelle Riva / Quevenzhane Wallis / Naomi Watts
Verdict? I see Chastain as the winner , while Lawrence is skillful actress she deserved it more for Winters Bone than Silver Linings , Watts also gave a tremendous performance in The Impossible.
Best Supporting Actor
Alan Arkin / Robert De Niro / Philip Seymour Hoffman / Tommy Lee Jones / Christoph Waltz
Verdict? The obvious choice is Christoph Waltz , he does deserve it too he is a terrific actor.
Best Supporting Actress
Amy Adams / Sally Field / Anne Hathaway / Helen Hunt / Jacki Weaver
Verdict? Hathaway will win and rightly so for that heart rendition rendition of I dreamed a dream , and for stealing the show with less than 20 minutes screen time. Although I pity Adams who's seems to always crop up and never win , she undoubtedly deserved it more for The Fighter than for The Master though.
Best Director
Michael Haneke / Benh Zeitlin / Ang Lee / Steven Spielberg / David O Russell
Verdict? I see no other option than Spielberg taking the prize , although perhaps the academy will surprise us. I am yet too see Beasts. so I can't comment on Zeitlin , I will hope however that Lee gets some recognition for his extraordinarily mesmerising direction of Life Of Pi.
Best Adapted Screenplay
Chris Terrio (Argo) / Benh Zeitlin & Lucy Alibar (Beasts.) / David Magee (Life Of Pi) / Tony Kushner (Lincoln) / David O Russell (Silver Linings Playbook)
Verdict? Russell's screenplay was unique , witty and surprisingly respectable for a rom-com , Argo was cleverly paced and formed so Terrio is also worth commending. Magee took the difficult job of transforming Pi onto screen but despite all this I can only picture the award being handed to Kushner.
Best Original Screenplay
Michael Haneke (Amour) / Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained ) / John Gatins (Flight) / Wes Anderson & Roman Coppola (Moonrise Kingdom) / Mark Boal (Zero Dark Thirty)
Verdict? I would love Moonrise Kingdom to win for its off beat , odd and rare take at a sort of rom-com , but I think Tarantino will take the prize for this one.
my rambling opinions on films , film events , film awards and occasionally other stuff too.

What's right and wrong about this years nominations?
5 things right about 2013 nominations:
1. Well done academy you've nominated a rom com , a foreign film and an indie ; how diverse!
2. Moonrise Kingdom for best original screenplay , such a nostalgic and charmingly original idea.
3. Bafta nominating seven physcopaths for outstanding British film , it has been underrated and was hugely unique coupled with a brilliantly witty and intelligent script.
4. Bafta rising stars , Elizabeth Olsen , Juno Temple please.
5. Headhunters being nominated for a Bafta , what an extraordinary thriller , the script was excellently clever and provided an extremely intriguing watch.
9 things wrong about this years nominations:
1. The lack of Eddie Redmayne in best supporting actor category for Les Mis , did anyone watch and hear empty chairs and empty tables?
2. Where is John Hawkes nomination? The topic may be odd but his performance in The Sessions was incredible!
3. Bradley Cooper is not an Oscar worthy actor , just because he frowned a little , shouted about Ernest Hemingway and was directed by David O Russel.
4. The probable fate that Lincoln will walk away with most , yes its Spielberg and Day Lewis but yes its long , boring and it's time to give someone else a go.
5. Leonardo DiCaprio missing out once more , I feel like most people forget he is actually a very good actor , forget Titanic and think Gilbert Grape.
6. If you're going to nominated O Russel for some shots of Cooper throwing books and Lawrence dancing the how about Juan Antonio Bayona's The Impossible , those magnificent scenes of the tsnunami and the shots that captured the aftermath of tragedy have since been undermined.
7. What about The Impostor for best documentary? A rare story that proves truth may be stranger than fiction , executed in such a chilling and captivating manner its hard to forget. Although the acedemy gave it a miss fortunately Bafta saw the light.
8. Bafta nominating The Master for original screenplay , it was increadibly unsteady , unsure of itself and at most oddly confusing.
9. Bafta , why have you nominated Ben Affleck for best actor , did you notice he only changed his facial expression once during Argo's entirety? A certain song from Team America comes to mind....

The Sessions
What's it about? Inspired by a true story , a man who uses an iron lung seeks a sex surrogate in order to loose his virginity.
Starring? John Hawkes , Helen Hunt , William H Macy
An unusual topic at most , something many may steer clear of , and yet The Sessions is refreshingly unique. The issue of severe disability is handled with delicate grace and good humour , providing a somewhat different outlook. The story of Mark O Brian may not seem extraordinary , but what may seem a small leap for many is an incredible feat for him. It's unconventional , almost touching on taboo but it provides a healthily different perception of sex that marks a stark contrast from the cleches of many blockbusters. Hawkes gives a stellar performance as paralysed O Brian , he utterly commits to the part and although his performance is physically limited he is still able to convey his characters' insight to the audience. Helen Hunt also provides an wonderful support , bringing an uplifting sense of ease to the film which is much needed. Hunt's performance is brave and she manages to execute the role with comfortable elegance that many actress' would struggle to achieve. Lewin's script is well paced , charmingly frank , humorous and handles the odd topic with masterful skill. The sessions is ultimately touching , a truly authentic story that makes a brilliant change from the norm. I feel it an utter disgrace that Hawkes has lost out on a nomination , especially considering the likes of Bradley Cooper made it. Finally Lewin's direction as polio sufferer himself creates a film that is brilliantly heartfelt and a watch that is not easily forgotten.
Verdict? 4.5 stars , a witty yet touching tale brilliantly executed.

Golden Globes
The Golden Globes 2013 , the expected glamour , some unexpected winners and most of all an array of heart felt , witty and articulate acceptance speeches. Certainly the surprise success of Ben Affleck's Argo has shaken the nominations of The Academy Awards in late February . Affleck himself was excluded from the Best Director Category and many had counted on Lincoln leaving with the big awards. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey did an excellent job bringing mostly guilt free humour to the show , and providing an adequate replacement to Ricky Gervais. The awards season has truly begun with a bang.
The 6 best moments:
1. The entirety of Tina Fey's and Amy Poehler's opening duologue.
2.Daniel Day Lewis doing the ET finger.
3. Jodie Fosters tearful speech.
4. Will Ferell and Kristin Wiig presenting an award.
5. That Adele / Daniel Craig high five.
6. Glenn Close drunk.
The 5 worst moments:
1. Taylor Swifts moment of jealousy as Adele wins 'best song'
2. Listening to each person doing their best French pronunciation of 'Les Miserables'
3. Leonardo DiCaprio missing out once more.
4. Qunetin Tarintino's foul backstage language.
5. The silence between Selma Hayek and Paul Rudd when the Teleprompter failed.
The top 6 quotes of the night:
1. "When it comes to torture I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron" (Amy Poehler)
2. "I have never seen someone so totally alone and abandoned like that since you were on stage with James Franco at the Oscars" (Tina Fey , referring to Anne Hathaway)
3. "I want to dedicate this to my mum , who I know is up there tonight looking down on me ... and telling everyone around up there how well her son is doing in acting" (Damien Lewis)
4. "Oh..what does it say? I beat Meryl!" (Jennifer Lawrence)
5. "Oh my god! Honestly I've come for a night out with my friend Ida , we're new mums ....I was not expecting this! Thank you so much! Oh my god! " (Adele)
6. "You know what Taylor Swift? You stay away from Michael J Fox's son. " (Tina Fey)
New Bell Jar Film
I accidentally landed upon the imdb page for the upcoming film based on Silvia Plath's only novel 'The Bell Jar' . With an unconfirmed release and director, it is set to star Julia Stiles , Rose McGowan , Virginia Madsen with the adaptation being written by Tristine Skyler. Having recently read the semi - autobiographical novel I found it intelligently written , conveying a profound understanding of the illness of depression that had never quite been done before. The Bell Jar follows the struggles of youth , social convention and mental illness through the eyes of promising young woman Esther Greenwood and is both tragic and hopefull. I have not yet viewed the 1979 version but am most certainly looking forward to this release , here is the IMDB page:

Argo
What's it all about? A dramatisation of the real life CIA-Canadian secret operation to rescue six fugitive American diplomats out of Iran during the 1980s.
Starring? Ben Affleck , Bryan Cranston , John Goodman , Alan Arkin , Victor Garber.
I wanted to like this film , after the golden globe success I was excited to witness Affleck finally truly proving himself since the dark days of Pearl Harbour. I am mildly disappointed , while he shows skill as a director/producer his performance was somewhat bland , in fact I'm almost certain he failed to change his facial expression at any point in the film. Arguably he should have stuck to the directors chair , and left the main role for someone else. However Argo is captivating , interesting and uncommon. It perhaps begins too slowly , with the pace feeling a little too mellow and the supposedly chaotic events passing with ease. Although it regains itself tremendously in the last section , paralysing the audience with tension and leaving them proudly entertained. Chris Terrio's script is what drives Argo's success , it maintains an effective balance of humour , politics and thrilling action. Despite my criticisms the film is largely commendable , Affleck's direction is quietly executed yet positively effective in conveying an authentic context and involving the audience in the plot. Affleck is helped by a notable supporting cast , especially Arkin and Cranston who help rejuvenate the blander moments. I still have a somewhat undecided opinion on Argo , I am not blown away but can not escape the fact that at its root its though rally captivating and entertaining. Having said this I am unsure it is deservant of its Best Film golden globe.
Verdict? 4 stars , an interestingly strange story that appeals to all film goers.

Silver Linings Playbook
What's it all about? Former teacher Pat moves back in with his parents after time in a mental institution and his plans to reconcile with his ex wife become somewhat compromised when he meets widow Tiffany.
Starring? Jennifer Lawrence , Bradley Cooper , Robert De Niro , Jacki Weaver .
I have a lot of trust in writer/director David O Russell after the success of The Fighter , I also am partial to a charming romantic comedy from time to time ; nevertheless it seemed an appropriate watch. Silver Linings is indeed unusual , it doesn't quite fit into a genre and is perhaps an odd pick for the traditionally finicky Academy. What really leads this film is the script , the idea is intelligently original and the execution witty and heart felt. Mental illness is a subject which for once is dealt with in a refreshingly humorous manner , the theme is strangely combined with an off beat romance yet somehow it works. The cast demonstrate brilliant performances all round , particularly Lawrence who holds her own as a depressed yet quirky widow. Cooper fills his role well , although somehow misses the Oscar mark. It is undoubtedly entertaining throughout , mostly light-hearted with moments of poignancy that make the film stand out from common rom-coms. We remain intrigued , impatiently hoping for the When Harry Met Sally moment. Silver Linings is on the cusp of something special , it begins with such promise and inescapably looses focus on the real issues , becoming slightly more Hollywood and slightly less realistic. It's recommendable and certainly notable, but leaves me wondering whether it was just O Russel's name that gained it all those nominations.
Verdict? 4 stars , witty , charming and almost brilliant.

Tiny Furniture
What's it all about? Freshly graduated Aura finds herself lost when she returns to her home in New York in an attempt to figure out what to do with her life.
Starring? Lena Dunham , Grace Dunham , Laurie Simmons.
I had heard from a fair few that the hit new show 'Girls' was a little too odd , but when I checked it out for myself I was pleasantly surprised. It's not genius , but its entertaining , refreshing and thankfully many miles closer to reality than the likes of Sex And The City . Anyway , after finishing the first season I figured it would be a good idea to watch creator Lena Dunham's breakout feature film 'Tiny Furniture' , which indeed earned her a chance at her own HBO series. Interestingly enough , Dunham created the film loaning her parent's money and using unpaid friends and family as cast. She stars as the central character of Aura , a girl inevitably lost after graduation and attempting to figure it all out. Aura is a character with whom I inescapably relate , although I am yet through university, I too am yet to decide on my ambitions , and like many other youths I am sometimes overcome by the fearful realisation that I am actually growing up. Tiny Furniture is perhaps nothing special , a sweet and offbeat depiction of a moment that everyone undoubtedly will experience in their lifetime. Dunham's script is witty , heartfelt and authentic whilst her direction is clean and candid. The relatively inexperienced cast cope well , with honest performances , making it appear more like it has been crafted from home made footage than anything else. Tiny Furniture is charmingly mellow , a sincere portrayal of the beginnings of adulthood. By no means revolutionary , and perhaps not so easily remembered , yet somehow it captures us in the struggles of youth. I too am now determined to debut a feature film before I have reached twenty-five , although I contemplate how willing my parents are to hand me $50,000.
Verdict? 3 stars , a triumphantly complaisant debut.

Attack The Block
What's it all about? When an alien lands on a South East London estate and attacks youth Moses he attacks back , leading the aliens to seek revenge. Him and his gang must join forces with woman they mugged , a posh stoner and nine year olds armed with super soakers , in order to save thier estate from invasion.
Starring? Nick Frost , Jodie Whittaker , Luke Treadaway , John Boyega.
An alien attack on a South East London estate? It seem in the case of director/ writer Joe Cornish this is teh equation to original comic genius. Cornish somehow manages to make us sympathise with a bunch of knife yielding , foul mouthed youths , despite the fact they mug an innocent woman and swear between every other word. As a South East Londer myself I soon was accustomed to their unique dialect , and was even inspired to drop the odd 'init' myself after watching. When gang leader Moses decides avenges an alien for attacking him and the gorilla like creatures seek revenge themselves , he must join forces with some odd companions to defend thier estate against the invasion. Thus the battle of Chav vs Alien commences , and boy is it epic. Cornish displays a fine balance of action , comedy and sharp fanged extra terrestrials. The fresh faced cast a re nigh on faultless, and do all they can to enhance the witty dialogue and refreshing plot. Attack the block is wonderfully light-hearted and humorous , and a great representation of British cinema.Cornish's script
implies more than just alien comedy though , beneath the battle lies a message of prejudice and underprivileged backgrounds. Perhaps Cornish is asking us to see past the hoodies , because who knows , they may just save you from an alien invasion one day .
Verdict? 4 Stars , cleverly hilarious.
2012 Review
In all honesty it has not been the most riveting year for me , all this talk of schools days being the best of your life is pretty much untrue , A-Levels are boring and hard work ;I can't wait for them to end. Life Of Pi
What's it all about? A young man named Pi , survives a disaster at sea and is hurtled into an epic adventure whilst forming a strange bond with a Bengal tiger.
Starring? Suraj Sharma , Irrfan Khan , Rafe Spall
Ever since 'Brokeback Mountain' I have long-since been an Ang Lee fan , so nevertheless I was very excited to hear he would be behind the film version of Yann Martel's acclaimed book. I have never read it myself , although I have heard from many that it was a story that seemed entirely 'unfilmable' . Thus I was a little sceptical but I kept my faith and headed to the cinema. Perhaps what is so striking about Life Of Pi is the direction , helped by the 3D , Lee encapsulates the chaotic beauty of India and later the mesmerising sights of Pi's shipwrecked travels. The storm sequences are magnificent , hauling the audience into the action and providing a restless watch. David Magee's adapted script is truly special , captivating and original and about much more than it seems. I am not the most avid fan of films crammed with special effects but unlike James Cameron's Avatar , Lee used it to his advantage , enhancing the story rather than distracting from it. The wildlife are terrifyingly realistic , this is a feat considering majority were filmed with CGI. Life of Pi is more than just a shipwreck , its a hypnotic tale of faith , survival and human nature. We are left with many questions , but enough answered that we are satisfied. A wonderful film in its entirety , with a great breakout performance from Suraj Sharma , it is unlike anything you have ever seen before.
Verdict? 5 stars , mesmerising and thought provoking

Another Earth
What's it all about? On the night of discovering 'Another Earth' a promising Student , and the family of an accomplished composer collide in a tragic and fatal car accident.
Starring? Brit Marling , William Mapother , Mattew- Lee Erlbach
I must say , a fairly deceitful title. What I thought to be a quirky sci-fi about the possibilities and consequences of 'Another Earth' was in fact about something else entirely. Instead it follows the story of a young woman's struggle to overcome the guilt of killing a man's wife and son in a car accident. It's a good idea , but executed badly. Mike Cahill's and Brit Marling's script is satisfactory and mediocre , whilst the plot feels as though its floating in space ; lacking direction and pace. Cahill's direction has moments of genius , he has photographic vision but when trying to portray a story. It's messy and confusing , feeling more like a personal thoughts that struggle to articulate themselves in a film. Another Earth has a sense of feeling flat and emotionless , at points I respect it's tranquil nature yet the lack of range in the tone was tiresome. It's an intriguing idea that is lost in what should be sub plot , it seems as though two ideas have crashed together. At times it's thought provoking and moving , however mainly bland and messy. The main performances are bland and do little to encourage an emotional response from the audience. To add to it's cons , the ending is irritable and atrocious. Another Earth had promise but sadly I'm left disappointed.
Verdict? 2.5 stars , intriguing yet disappointing.

The Impossible
What's it all about? Based on real life account of a family caught in the middle of one of the worlds worst natural catastrophes , we follow Maria and her son Lucas as they struggle to survive and reunite with the rest of their family.
Starring? Naomi Watts , Ewan McGregor , Tom Holland , Samuel Joslin ,Oaklee Pendergast
A lazy New Years Day seems an appropriate time to head to the Cinema , although perhaps The Impossible was not the best choice for a group of queasy hangover teenagers. Without a doubt this is not easy watching from the start , the 3D sound fills the cinema and instantly submerges the audience into the film. Writers Sergio Sanchez and Maria Belon set the scene perfectly , a picturesque utopia filled to the brim with naive holiday makers ; we are given a sense of the family and immediately sympathise. Juan Antonia Bayona's direction perfectly captures the sudden chaos of the tsunami and the tragedy it leaves in its wake. We are witness to an extraordinary scene , Bayona's builds up the tension in such a way that we are left bracing ourselves for the wave ; which itself is filmed so realistically we almost feel somewhat involved. The film proceeds to the aftermath , we are left completely restless as the characters struggle to safety , Bayona manages to create an immense state of shock and tension amongst the viewers. The Impossible is undoubtedly an incredible story of survival , filmed and written with realistic humanity ; although this is no surprise as the real life Maria co-wrote the film. It is intense and we are hauled through a huge range of emotions , it leaves us on the edge of our seats , inevitably teary eyed. The acting is superb from the entire cast ,Watts and McGregor provide confident and emotional performances that are well supported by the younger cast ; especially Holland who shines as Maria's son Lucas. Viewing that is not for the faint hearted , Bayona does not shy away showing us shocking injuries or indeed the full extent of the tragic consequences the tsunami had on those involved. A thought provoking film , one that is not easily forgettable as we are shown the tragic impact through the incredible story of one family.
Verdict? 4.5 Stars , an incredible story brilliantly told

Brave Heart
What's it all about? Epic historial drama following the quest of 13th Century Scottish warrior William Wallace as he leads the first war of Scottish independence.
Starring? Mel Gibson , Sophie Marceau , Patrick McGoohan
A young man William Wallace (Mel Gibson) seeks to unite Scotland against England after his wife is murdered by English soldiers ; que your typical Hollywood 13th century battle epic. In technical terms this was undoubtedly a notable piece - it has everything it's genre requires , a picturesque location , triumphant music scores and epic battle sequences. Sadly I felt it lacked depth and reality but perhaps it was the time period or the fact it's not exactly historically accurate. In total Braveheart lacks in ability to convey real emotion to an audience or enable you to connect with the characters. William Wallace's story has potential , but with an overhaul of unbearable cringe it lands itself in the middle of every other substandard and disappointing block buster. For some reason it won an Oscar , it was seventeen years ago but nonetheless my faith in the Academy is dwindling. I was left lying on my sofa for almost three wasted hours wondering the point of Wallace's quest for freedom. I lacked the respect I should have felt for Wallace and the meaning behind the story was hazy and unclear. Randall Wallace's screenplay is generic and unoriginal , whilst Gibson gives a forgettable performance although with a commendable Scottish accent. Similarly to the plot Gibson lacks emotion and his facial expression remains at a mild proud frown throughout. Since watching this and the trailer for The Beaver I remain with no respect for Mel Gibson , even if he managed to direct the film to a decent level.
Verdict? 2 stars , like any-other mediocre blockbuster
Into The Wild
What's it all about? Drama- Biopic telling the story of Christopher McCandless , student who upon graduation donates his entire savings to Oxfam and decides to travel to Alaska ; breaking away from from both family and society.
Starring? Emile Hirsch , Jena Malone , Vince Vaugn , Kristen Stewart
I am soon to embark on gap year travels of my own , so it's worth saying anything involving the subject usually is of some interest to me. Into the wild tells the true story of McCandless , who drops everything with the youthful idea of travelling across America. The ideal is something I relate to in parts , though I hardly wish to act on it , I've long since had the desire to leave the city behind and take a journey travelling. Writer / Director Sean Penn paints a complex portrait of McCandless' rare journey , it's somewhat unbiased leaving the final judgement upon the audience. His direction involves us in moments of an idealic bliss and crippling tragedy, as McCandless stumbles across the American wilderness in search of some kind of contentment. Emile Hirsch gives a commendable performance as the lead , giving us a true sense of his journey. The supporting cast do well , minus Stewart who gives us a bland and irritable performance. McCandless is brave , reckless and naive , we can never quite make up our minds about him. It is a charming and thought provoking tale , fizzing with youthful energy and a deep sense of humanity. It certainly amplified my desire to travel , although I wont be giving away all my possessions any time soon and attempting to live in the outback.
Verdict? 4.5 stars , a rare and poignant story

Paranormal Activity
What's it about? After moving into a suburban home , a couple become increasing disturbed by a nightly demonic presence.
Starring? Micah Sloat , Katie Featherston
Usually I am not one for scary films but for some absurd reason I thought Paranormal Activity would be a good idea. I personally blame crowd mentality , I was with my friends , It was a sleepover and it seemed an appropriate time to scare ourselves. As the film began to play it dawned on me the consequences , sleep deprivation , increased electricity bills from leaving the light on , and so on. Alas I remained a naive viewer , convincing myself that no matter how hard it tried this was utter fiction. Strangely enough at first the film gave no indication as to being frightening , but viewers do not be fooled. Cleverly Oren Peli catches us off guard , luring us into a false sense of security as the minutes wind past fearlessly. From the moment that door starts mysteriously slamming everything takes a sinister turn for the worst. Everything quickly escalates and soon you'll be left covering your face and grimacing in fear. Without a doubt writer/director Peli succeeds in scaring us , despite a relatively low budget and use of handheld cameras - but perhaps it is this Blair Witch Project style that makes it so realistic. Peli builds up tension beautifully as each event ascends and more information is revealed about the mysterious presence in the couple's house. In many ways I commend the film , for the genre its original and favours the more respected physiological terror over gruesome Saw style gore. The ambiguity of the satanic presence creates a fear of the unknown that becomes mutual between characters and audience. Peli's plot is simplistic and admittedly generic at points but nonetheless the idea is clever. I feel it is a note worthy horror , although it is worth noting I am somewhat of a novice in the genre and do in fact scare easily.
Verdict? 4 stars , you’ll be sleeping with the lights on
Source Code
What's it all about? An action thriller centered on a soldier who wakes up in the body of an unknown man and discovers he is part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train.
Starring? Jake Gyllenhaal , Michelle Monaghan , Vera Farmiga
It was not exactly intended viewing I admit , more of a nothing else on - lazy Sunday afternoon watch. Fortunatley Source Code surprised me ; the plot being markedly complex for what I had assumed would be 93 minutes of generic cringe. Alas , it wasn't exactly Oscar worthy but it was somewhat impressive ; a good ending and a fair amount of twists and turns. Gyllenhaal gives a good performance , and its refreshing to see him back in good films rather than 'Love and other drugs'. Ben Ripley's plot held the right balance of complexity , emotion , charm and action. Duncan Jones' direction is also note worthy , plenty of well filmed action sequences. An easy watch that won't leave you bored , recommended watching.
Verdict? 3.5 Stars , worth the watch
Batman Begins
What's it about? Bruce Wayne looses his parents to a senseless crime and years later become the Batman that must save crime-ridden Gotham City.
Starring? Christian Bale , Michael Cane , Liam Neeson , Katie Holmes , Gary Oldman , Cillian Murphy
After watching The Dark Knight rises I guiltily realized I had never properly watched Batman Begins, so I did. Admittedly I did not rate it as highly as the other two of Nolan's Batman films , but nevertheless it was still a quality and highly entertaining film. Firstly I commend Nolan for living up the films title as following the very beginning of Batman and not just jumping from an impulsive idea to become a superhero straight into some highly explosive action through the streets of Gotham. Nolan has almost created a new genre , the superhero blockbuster with brains. He doesn't fixate on violence , stereotypes or special effects instead he explores the man behind the mask ; making a much more interesting and entertaining film. Perhaps the villain does not match the standards of Heath Ledgers Joker or Tom Hardy's Bane , but the acting once more is almost faultless - minus Katie Holmes. To me she seemed an odd fit for the part , and did not quite pull of the strong female character ; but then again I could just be relating to much with the tabloid painted picture of her I have in my head. Watching this so soon after The Dark Knight Rises enabled me to pick up all of Nolan's hints towards Batman's future , the Nolan brothers create such an intricate plot and script - it really is genius.
Verdict? 4 stars An intelligent and sturdy base for the following of the Batman Trilogy. I thinks it time for a Batman marathon.
Dark Knight Rises
What's it about? The latest instalment in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. The 'Dark Knight' must resurface to save Gotham against it's latest enemy , despite public opinion being against him.
Starring? Christian Bale , Joseph Gordon Levitt , Gary Oldman , Anne Hathaway , Marion Cotillard , Morgan Freeman , Michael Cane , Tom Hardy ......
Like many others , this was a highly anticipated film for me. In fact I decided to see the film at 1.30 am at the BFI Imax at Waterloo , waiting an hour and a half between the last train to Waterloo and the commencement of the film. In summary I would not have taken it lightly if the latest Batman was not up to my standards. Nolan you did not disappoint.
One of my pet peeves with films are those that go on for too long (aka Avatar or 162 minutes of my life I am not getting back) but despite the 164 minute length I remained entertained throughout. The Dark Knight Rises was truly spectacular , and provided a perfect ending to Nolan's trilogy. It was everything a superhero film should aspire to be , and don't get me wrong the action , special effects and explosions were brilliant but this was not what I admired most about the film. It was the fact that Christopher Nolan and his brother Jonathon Nolan (who co wrote the film) managed to find a sense of humanity beneath the character's famous costumes.
The script was witty , and the plot was constantly fast paced ensuring the finale included as many cameos , plot twists and loose ends tied up as was possible. As expecting with a cast like this the acting was very much on point , my only criticism being the sometimes inaudible mumbling of Batman and Bane. I'm not sure what else I can really say about this film without including spoilers so I will conclude by saying that I know when I see a film this good because it stops me wanting to be a film-maker , to me it seems completely out of my reach to make a film anywhere near this standard - although maybe I could do something with a budget of around 250 million.
Goodbye Coen brothers and hello Nolan brothers.
Verdict? 5 Stars , a legend in itself

Red Riding Hood
What's it about? Valerie's quiet life is disrupted when her village is disturbed by a murderous wolf , and a hunt begins to destroy it. She must also choose between her true love and the son of a wealthy blacksmith.
Starring: Amanda Seyfried , Max Irons , Shiloh Fernandez , Gary Oldman , Billy Burke
I was lucky enough to be able to attend the premiere screening of the film in Leicester Square , a slightly unnecessary fact but not exactly my average Thursday evening. Set in a medieval village haunted by the terror of a murderous wolf, red riding hood retells the folk tale from a somewhat different perspective. Directed by Catherine Hardwicke the film began with a considerably generic and predictable plot; bearing an uncanny resemblance to Hardwicke’s recent film Twilight. Although the film was often plagued by a tendency to become over dramatic, the moderately stereo typical story line was soon saved by Amanda Seyfreid, who stars as Valerie (a.k.a red riding hood). Seyfreid delivers a convincing portrayal of Valerie as her simplistic life is thrown out of balance when her village is unsettled by the threat of a ware wolf and she is forced to choose between a poor woodcutter (Shiloh Fernandez) and the son of a wealthy blacksmith (Max Irons). The story line remains bearably unoriginal throughout the piece but is redeemed only by a large budget and a surprisingly intelligent ending. I feel it is fair to say Hardwicke has done an adequate job on this film, it’s never easy to retell such a well known tale and the film does encompass moments of brilliance. I still remain undecided about my verdict for this film, I'm torn between declaring it a predictable and dull film saved only by a good cast and big budget and acclaiming its smart ending and clever take on a classic tale. I think that this film had the potential to shine and I applaud its eerie, dark tone and ability to surprise the audience. However it is also true to say the film is far from perfection and would be nothing without its cast and impressive sets. I think this film is worth a see but it’s nothing to get too excited about.
Verdict? 3 stars , a much better version of Twilight
Walk The Line
What's it all about? The rise to fame of country singer Johnny Cash and his struggle to deal with the consequences of success.
Starring? Reese Witherspoon , Joaquin Phoenix
Now I'm no fan of Johnny Cash , in fact I knew very little about this influential country star before I watched this film. As I sat to watch this film I tried to forget all my assumptions of country music and I am so pleased I did because what I thought could be a lifeless biopic about the life of a country singer I knew nothing about turned out to be an interesting tale of a singers struggle with drugs , romance and fame. Brilliantly pieced together , we see Cash go from rags to riches and back again . From his troubled childhood to his famous Folsom prison performance we are given an extremely realistic insight into his rise to fame. Both Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon give outstanding performances as June Carter and Johnny Cash , with Witherspoon deserving every inch of the Oscar she achieved for this role. Phoenix especially shines in his role as Johnny Cash , executing every detail of his character with perfection. A brilliantly made and acted film , regardless of whether country music interests you this film remains interesting. I’d recommend it to all especially Johnny Cash enthusiasts.
Verdict? 5 stars , A wonderfully crafted biopic exploring the highs and lows of fame
The September Issue
What’s it about? An insight into US Fashion Magazine Vogue as is produces it's 'September issue'.
Starring? Anna Wintour , Sienna Miller , designers and editors galore
This documentary - film aims to expose the real working life of US fashion magazine , Vogue. It successfully does this , showing that behind the diamonds , fur coats and embodied silk the world of fashion is far less glamorous than meets the eye. Anna Wintour also features in this film and manages to confirm everyone's belief that she really is the ruthless ice queen of the US Fashion industry. The film crew make several failed attempt to crack her icy exterior and find out what’s really beneath her Prada sunglasses and famous sleek bob ; with her only making one comment that her siblings find her job to be “amusing”. This is the real devil wears Prada , and a realistic insight into US Vogue ; a must - see for you fashion muses out there , though something to avoid if you think clothes are merely pieces of fabric to keep us warm.
Verdict? 3 Stars An interesting and realistic documentry but only for those with whom the words “Chanel” and “Prada” resonate deeply.

The Kings Speech
Whats it about? 'Bertie' , the Kings son , is required to speak publicly and with help from the unqualified Lionel he struggles to overcome his stammer and give the perfect speech.
Starring? Colin Firth , Helena Bonham Carter , Geoffeory Rush
A film so critically acclaimed I felt an enormous pressure to enjoy my viewing , like almost criticising it would be a sort of taboo. I admit it was excellently produced and Hooper's direction was masterful , in addition the costume and set was spectacular. Despite all this it left me cold and inevitably tired. Upon first glance a story about someone over coming a stammer is perhaps not the most riveting ; and in my opinion there is only so far it can go. I was only fifteen when I saw it so perhaps my immaturity is the reason for my boredom , or did I simply lack interest in the context? I feel as though whilst over coming a speech impediment is a feat of sorts , it seems to lack worth in comparison to many other stories of achievement and survival. However I do respect the film , Firth gives a great performance ; though I do feel he should have scooped more awards for A Single Man. A remarkably produced film , arguably more suited to mature adults with some sort of interest in the monarchy. In conclusion I felt the acclaim was not as deserved , and that the plot inevitably lacked substance.
Verdict? 3 stars , style over substance
(500) Days of Summer
What's it all about? Tom is a hopeless romantic , working in a card company and longing to be an architect. He soon falls for Summer , a woman who has never believed in love.
Starring? Joseph Gordon Levitt , Zoe Deshanel , Chloe Moretz
It is wonderfully refreshing to watch a romance that is not actually that romantic , and is not so full of cheesy cleches that it may as well be shown on the Disney channel. For once a story that is more realistic than stereotypical , and at last spares us from that awkwardly cringe worthy Hollywood ending. It is not your conventional When Harry Met Sally love story , and instead explores the realities of love and romantic ideals. It is a lovable indie romance , made better by a great soundtrack and incredibly charming performance from Joseph Gorden Levitt. Mark Webb's direction make the film even more originally individual , allowing the audience to explore Tom's hopeless romantic thoughts and dreams. The script is lovingly adorable , providing an off beat perspective to romance. 500 Days of Summer is unknowingly stylish and irresistibly lovable , a new type of romance.
Verdict? 4 stars , lovably charming
“You guys might not know this, but I consider myself a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one-man wolf pack. But when my sister brought Doug home, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack… it grew by one. So there… there were two of us in the wolf pack… I was alone first in the pack, and then Doug joined in later. And six months ago, when Doug introduced me to you guys, I thought, “Wait a second, could it be?” And now I know for sure, I just added two more guys to my wolf pack. Four of us wolves, running around the desert together, in Las Vegas, looking for strippers and cocaine. So tonight, I make a toast!”

Kick Ass
What’s it about? Teenager Dave tries to save his social problems by trying to fight crime in lycra like his favourite superheroes. Alas all does not initially go to plan and the film humorously follows his strugges to promote his alter ego and get the girl.
Starring? Aaron Johnson , Clark Duke , Evan Peters , Christopher Mintz-Plasse
Based upon the original comic books this film is truly genius , hilariously realistic in parts and consistently rude and horrific. This is not your typical superhero movie , because no one really has superpowers. It doesn't shy away from telling us what would actually happen if someone turned up in Lycra and tried to beat up some yobs. Jane Goldman's script is terribly funny and manages to present your stereotypical superhero characters in a new perspective. It is basically Spider man slash the Godfather slash Superbad and it is this unique combination that keeps it refreshingly different. Matthew Vaughn's direction creates perfect comic timing , and in partnership with a promising young cast creates an original piece of comic genius. A well written movie with a plot you haven't seen before ; a light hearted film with a refreshing sense of humour.
Verdict? 4 stars , charmingly funny , rude and violent

The Proposal
What's it about? Margaret's high flying New York life is almost destroyed when she faces deportation back to Canada - but can she solve it by bribing her assistant Andrew to marry her?
Starring? Sandra Bullock , Ryan Reynolds
If you are in the mood for a trashy , predictable romantic comedy then this is the movie for you . If you however are just simply looking for a good film I would sit this one out. The film will make you laugh a couple of times and in parts the characters can be charming . Yet overall it is a story that been done a thousand times , terribly predictable and therefore slightly boring. Two good looking people thrust into an unwanted relationship by circumstance - can we guess what happens next? I congratulate it for containing one tiny twist near the end but alas the finale will make you want to bury your head away from the unbearable cringe.
Verdict? 2 stars , cheesy and predictable retrieved only by a glimmer of charm and humour.
